What is Family Mediation?

Mediation offers a safe and structured space for conversation where a trained, neutral professional helps you and the other person talk through the issues that matter most. It’s not about taking sides. It’s about finding a way forward that works for everyone involved.
At Meraki Family Mediation, we believe mediation should feel human - not cold or clinical. It’s about real conversations, honesty, and creating space for moving forwards more amicably.

How it works

-
Voluntary – both people choose to take part.
-
Confidential – what’s said in the room, stays in the room (unless there are safeguarding concerns).
-
Flexible – we focus on your priorities, not a rigid court timetable.
-
Future-focused – we don’t dwell on the past, we work on solutions you can actually live with.
Why choose mediation instead of court?

Court can be expensive, stressful, and slow. Mediation offers:
-
More control – you shape the outcome, not a judge.
-
Less conflict – guided conversations reduce hostility.
-
Quicker resolutions – agreements are often reached in weeks, not months.
-
Child-centred – space to focus on what matters most for your children.
Do I still need a solicitor?

You don’t need a solicitor to take part in mediation. Many people find it helpful to seek independent legal advice alongside the process, but it’s your choice.
If you reach an agreement, we can put it in writing, and you may wish to ask a solicitor to make it legally binding.

What if the other person won’t come?

You can’t make someone attend mediation, but you can invite them to join. If they refuse, we’ll provide a certificate (MIAM certificate) which allows you to apply to court if needed.
Even if only one of you is open to mediation, taking that first step can show commitment to resolving things constructively.
